Brian Henderson and Joe Morelli sat in the break room of the Frederickport police station on Friday morning, each drinking a cup of coffee before their shift started. Brian was about to take another drink of coffee when his phone rang. He set the mug on the table, picked up his cellphone, and looked to see who was calling. It was Heather.

Joe silently drank his coffee while listening to Brian’s side of the conversation. When the call ended, Joe asked, “What was that all about?”

“When Heather was going to work this morning, she found Camilla standing in front of her house, staring at it. After Camilla asked Heather if that was her house, Heather asked if she was stalking her. But Camilla just ran away.”

“Camilla, as in your ex?” Joe asked.

Brian nodded. “I don’t know what Camilla’s deal is. One minute she’s telling me she wants to be friends, and the next she’s harassing my girlfriend. I guess they ran in to each other in the bathroom at Pier Café yesterday. Camilla got all in Heather’s face and pretty much told her she needed to stay away from me.”

“Camilla obviously wants to be friends with you—but not Heather.”

Brian let out a snort at Joe’s comment.

“Here you are,” Bowman said as he walked into the break room. “I’ve been looking all over for you two.”

Brian glanced at his watch and then looked back to Bowman. “Our shift doesn’t start for another fifteen minutes. Joe and I like to come in early before we have to start.”

Bowman looked to Brian. “I assumed you would want to know your ex-wife’s sister just called the station to report a missing person—your ex-wife.”

“Camilla’s missing?” Brian frowned.

“Her sister said they had breakfast yesterday morning at Pier Café, and Camilla decided to walk home. She never made it. They didn’t call right away, because they assumed she had met up with some friends and just didn’t bother checking in. But this morning, they figured they’d better call since she’s not answering her phone, and they have her car.”

“I don’t think we have much to worry about,” Joe said. “Camilla was over on Beach Drive this morning.”

Bowman frowned. “How do you know that?”

Joe glanced at Brian, waiting for him to explain.

Brian looked from Joe to Bowman, who now stared at him. Brian shrugged. “I talked to Heather a few minutes ago, and she said something about seeing Camilla in front of her house a little while ago.”

Bowman arched his brows. “Really?”

“You say Camilla has been missing since yesterday morning? And no one has seen her?” Brian asked.

“Apparently your girlfriend has,” Bowman said.

Brian shrugged again. “Heather just said she looked like Camilla. Maybe it was someone who looks like her.”

Joe frowned at Brian yet said nothing.

“If that’s the case, I think we should investigate.” Bowman looked to Joe. “I’d like you to go with me to Pier Café so we can ask them a few questions.”

“Joe and I can do it,” Brian offered.

Bowman looked back at Brian and shook his head.
